Unlike its predecessor, it was released exclusively for Wii U, a decision which caused quite a bit of controversy when it was announced. Platinum Games producer Inaba Atsushi explained the decision by saying Nintendo made production of the sequel possible and if it weren't for Nintendo's support, Bayonetta 2 would have never been made. However, players who own a Nintendo Wii U but have not played the original could get a chance to play the original game if they purchased a physical copy of Bayonetta 2 as it was bundled with a port of the original game. Said port also included some unique features such as the chance to have Bayonetta dress as various Nintendo characters. Sega is not involved with this installment of the game although it still owns the rights to the Bayonetta series. It was released on September 20, 2014. Despite the change in publisher, Platinum Games still does the majority of the development work on the game and it retains the over the top action and fanservice of its predecessor. The game introduces sequences where other characters fight alongside Bayonetta as opposed to the first game where Bayonetta did virtually all of her fighting solo. Unlike the Devil May Cry sequels and Ookamiden, creator Kamiya_Hideki was involved with the game's production, although he took a less active role in designing the game. Kamiya supervised the game and once again wrote the game's story while Hashimoto Yusuke directs and also designs the enemies, just like he did in the first game. This game differs from the original in that there is a Japanese and English voice track instead of just English voice acting. The seiyuus from Bayonetta Bloody Fate reprise their roles. Along with Bayonetta, Jeanne, Luka, Enzo and Rodin return in this game. All of the returning characters have changed costumes. Bayonetta and Jeanne have switched hairstyles with the former removing her beehive hairdo for a short hair cut while the latter has grown her hair out. Much like its predecessor, this game has numerous references and homages to other video games. Thanks to Platinum's partnership with Nintendo, this installment of the series features numerous Nintendo references and homages whereas the first game had many Sega references. The game begins soon after the first game's conclusion. Story-wise, Kamiya himself recommends playing the first game before the second as he sees the two games as two sides of the same coin as opposed to being completely separate. The game's story assumes knowledge of the first, so playing this game first or looking up information on it online will spoil some twists from the first game. Bayonetta, Jeanne, and Enzo are out shopping for Christmas, but the trio get little time to celebrate. Bayonetta and Jeanne sense that something is not quite right with the underworld as well as paradise. The two of them are attacked by angels while they're shopping, but the two easily fight them off as usual. However, when Bayonetta summons Gomorrah to deliver her usual brutal finisher on an Angel, Gomorrah suddenly turns against her. Jeanne saves Bayonetta but at the cost of having her soul knocked out of her body and dragged to hell. After defeating Gomorrah, Bayonetta is determined to save her close friend. Rodin tells Bayonetta that she has a slim chance of saving Jeanne if she heads to the sacred mountain of Fimbulvinter where the true Gates of Hell are located. However, Bayonetta only has one day before Jeanne's soul is consumed by Hell, leaving her to be tormented forever. Once Bayonetta reaches Fimbulvinter, she encounters a young amnesiac boy with special powers named Loki. As he is also going to Fimbulvinter and is more familiar with the surroundings, Bayonetta asks him to accompany her in order to speed up her quest to save Jeanne. As the two venture to the Gates of Hell, they are pursued by Angels and a powerful mysterious masked Lumen Sage, both of who are targeting Loki. Said Lumen Sage also seems to have a connection to Bayonetta. . . Like its predecessor, the game received mostly positive reviews from critics.
