I think that these pictures are popular because they depict someone the audience can relate too (since most otaku are indeed fat and oldish( well, much older than the girls they fap too, anyway.)

BUT, on the other hand, seeing NTR of characters from a show you've watched can be uncomfortable. see the TV tropes NTR page. apparently, there is a sort of assumption of purity from characters, so NTR rubs people the wrong way. NTR from shows you've never seen or of original content, that's not so much of a personal blow, if'n you catch my meaning
