i think this particular piece of art is a metaphor. the sign is representative a his entire dimeanor. that unique outfit, all those weapons, he's the only one in a crowd that wears a hood & nobody EVER sees his face. he minus well wear the sign...if u lived in that time & saw a hooded man clad with way too many weapons & u dont say to urself "i think i should get the fuck out of here" then maybe u deserve to die. how he gets away with killin anybody & NOT be the prime suspect is nothing short of amazing. jus sayin.

Actually, i believe hoods were rather normal in that period and region. People couldn't afford to stay at home during the day, so thay had to wear hoods to protect themselves from the sun. Typical peasant couldnt afford a hat (not that you could just casually buy a hat there anyway), so usually they just grabbed some old rags and used them as hoods. Soldiers were often doing the exactly same thing.

Altair's clothes are also kinda plain. White, or rather gray attire, hood, leather belt and red scarf. As for weapons, his sword is the only well visible piece of equipment(thogh you can still see a dagger if you'rebehind him). I don't think it would be all that suspicious, especially during crusades.

On the other hand, Ezio... well, that guy have no excuse. He's wearing a hood in renaissance Venice and seems to be melding easily with the low class crowd despite wearing very expensive clothes. Not to mention the arsenal he constantly carry. The guy should be easy to spot, like a naked prostitute among the clergy.
