You forget a very small detail, superstar. Dante needed Trish's lightning powers in order to fully defeat Mundus. So no Dante did not own Mundus or kill him on his own.

Either way both characters are equal in terms of powers and appeal to me.

They'd fight for five minutes, realize that they're basically both the good guys, then go kill evil demons and angels while letting loose cheesy double entendre one-liners, which eventually ends up with them going back in time to kill the Big Bad demon god that set them against each other so hard, that it causes The Big Bang. And it would be the best game ever.
