Long-running and immensely popular JRPG franchise developed by Squaresoft, now Square-Enix, and created by Sakuguchi Hironobu. The original game debuted in 1987 for the NES. Although the games are numbered and considered part of the same franchise, each individual game is not a direct sequel to the previous game and has a completely different setting and cast. Nevertheless, there are a few recurring elements like having a character named Cid, Chocobos, etc. A few of the Final Fantasy games have received direct sequels/prequels, forming their own sub series within the larger franchise. Composer Uematsu Nobuo is closely associated with this franchise and he has composed the soundtracks for most of the Final Fantasy games. Character designer and video game director Nomura Tetsuya has also had his career launched by this franchise thanks to Final Fantasy VII's success though he has been involved with the series since the SNES-era Final Fantasy games as a monster and graphic designer. Prior to Final Fantasy VII Amano Yoshitaka was the main character designer of the series. The franchise also has a crossover fighting game, Dissidia and its prequel Dissidia 012.
