Les Aventures de Tintin (EN: The Adventures of Tintin, JP: タンタンの冒険) is a popular series of comics revolving around the adventures of Tintin, a young Belgian reporter and adventurer who travels around the world with his pet companion Milou (EN and JP: Snowy). The series began as a serial in the children's column of Le Vingtième Siècle (The Twentieth Century), a Belgian newspaper of which Hergé was an illustrator. He originally wanted Tintin's first adventure to be in the United States, but the newspaper insisted that he make a story about his adventures in the Soviet Union, wanting it to be anti-socialist propaganda for children. The first story, Tintin au pays des Soviets (EN: Tintin in the Land of the Soviets) was published as a serial from 1929 to 1930, and as an album book in 1930. After that, the paper also insisted he make another story teaching about the positives of Belgian-colonialized Congo, and so Tintin au Congo (EN: Tintin in the Congo) was the next story, nowadays considered a racist comic. Finally, Hergé made the comic he wanted to make, Tintin en Amérique (EN: Tintin in America), which still followed the fast paced "random-events plot" of the previous comics. It wouldn't be until Les Cigares du Pharaon (EN: Cigars of the Pharaoh) and Le Lotus bleu (EN: The Blue Lotus) that the conventional format was used. Tintin has been all over the world, from England to Tibet, and even the moon. After Hergé felt he culminated with Tintin au Tibet (EN: Tintin in Tibet) and completed Tintin et les Picaros (EN: Tintin and the Picaros), he wanted to do one last story, Tintin et l'alph-art (EN: Tintin and Alph-Art), a story about modern art, which Hergé had been a fan of. Unfortunately, he died before it was finished. The parts he completed were published posthumously in 1986. Tintin's legacy can be still felt today, being published in several languages.
