One particularly effective way of dealing with trolls is when identified, add them to a fishbowl of sorts. Anyone in the "fishbowl" sees all of the crap tags and mayhem, but all of us in the real world don't. If they don't realize they're being circumvented they're a lot less likely to change their tactics. In the case of Gelbooru, it would probably also be effective to add any tag, edit, or image created by a "fishbowl" account to the bowl - visible to them, but not to us. If an account creates a large number of known bad tags, they get added to the bowl automatically, or at least nominated automatically to an admin.

Ban them and they'll come back. Undo the damage and they're redo it. Undo it but make them *think* it's still there, and the problem is largely eliminated.

I'm not quite sure I understand. But it sounds you are suggesting creating false front tags on vandalized images for those who have attacked them?

There is some success in that but it could backfire. And it would take a lot of time and money to implement I'm willing to bet.

Unless I'm misunderstanding.

Basically, yes. You put them in a reality marble of sorts, where their edits appear to them to be applied, when in reality they aren't.

Yes, it would take quite a bit of time to implement this. However, I don't believe that it would really take that much money, since the tags seem to be stored in a single cell in the PHP table. It would take up space to add one of these to each user account for tags that they have edited, sure, but in reality, plain text doesn't take a whole lot of space. Of course, this wouldn't be true if we also used it for uploaded posts. Images take a lot more space than text, so if a user ended uploading a lot of images, we'd have to delete them even from his fishbowl world.

Right - implementation could be tricky, especially if there are a lot of trolls to keep track of, and it may cause issues for any database indexes (although if trolls get slower lookups, well boo freaking hoo). I really have no idea how hard it would be to implement on a site such as GB. The biggest flaw is since GB can be accessed anonymously, they could always compare what they see logged in to what they see when not logged in. Typically this has been used for private forums where such an issue wouldn't apply.

I recall first reading about this technique years ago, and I thought it was deliciously evil.

That guy uploads a little fast. Are we supposed to clean it up or are you guys doing that thing where you just track what he does?

In case you haven't heard of Omar Fernadez, he's a guy or bot who bulk uploads much poorer quality versions of images on site and tags them extremely poorly. This is at least his 5th account, but you can always identify him by his tagging behavior, he'll post tags in the source section, the tags will usually be mispelled (look out for niplees) and the tags will often have very little to do with the image (he's very fond of putting schoolgirl, rape and "cencored" in images that don't contain them). So yes, he's a bit of a menace.

What the gardeners have been told to do is look through the images, flag the duplicates and generally poor quality images (just use the similar option) and tag the images that are actually new.

I know the whole 'straight_trap' thing has been resolved, but he also added 'hetero_trap' and 'hetero_uke'.

I sent him a mod notice about it and he said he wouldn't do it again.
