Curious about localized naming
Posted on: 03/18/24 10:35AM

I know most western run anime sites use the Japanese naming of characters due to them often being changed when localized.

But what about the case of something like Darkstalkers, where it was developed in the west and renamed for the Japanese market? Wouldn't going with 'unlocalized' naming mean using the original western names?

Like I said, just curious about corner-cases like that.

darkstalkers would work way way better than vampire_(game)

Big Felicia fan right here.

It depends if the localized name is good than it's origin.
For example, Mega Man will be a better choice than "Rockman" because it's a easy name to remember and that Mega Man doesn't shoot rocks from his buster.

Fun fact: he's named "Rockman" in Japanese because "rock", as in "rock music", as a loan word in Japanese is used as an adjective rather than a noun, and it's usage would be synonymous with "cool". It's similar to how things involving demons, violence, and skeletons might be described as being "metal" because of their association with the music genre. It has nothing to do with literal rocks.

So is Pyra and Mythra better than Homura and Hikari, the first ones feel more like the names of such beings while the later are just normal names, even tho both have the similar meanings.

Also, personal taco thing but doing Malhos rather than Malos makes it slightly less dumb for us, "What's the name of the villain? Ehvil"

The last part was hyperbolic actually.
Anyway, to add to the conversation, naming characters out of music in general were such a rare instance that it means special to me.
For example, Protoman's japanese name is "Blues", another music genre which fits well in his character.
Bass and Treble were named after clef notes. Their japanese names: "Forte and Gospel" are also musical, Forte is a loud dynamic while Gospel is quartet music.

I don't like how in some origins like these turned out to be so dull.

Mega Man rolls of the tongue better than Rockman anyways.

Also, Pyra and Mythra sound so much cooler than "Homura" and "Hikari". There's dozens of anime characters already named homura and hikari.
